All About Gut Health on the Self Transformed Podcast with Emily Nichols!

I don’t eat vegetables or fiber.⁣

I eat a 💩 ton of meat.⁣

⁣Why? 

It works better for ME & my special digestive needs.⁣ For decades I chased fat loss & performance as a Crossfit Athlete following diets because everybody else was doing it. But I found myself broken, emotionally eating, inflamed, bloated, & unable to lose body fat despite “eating ‘clean’ & all the right things.”

Had a consult call yesterday with a client struggling to find the right diet. The problem — focusing solely on fat loss & not holistic health first. That includes mindset, gut health, & your relationship with food & exercise.⁣

⁣First thing’s first — there is no such thing as a “clean” or “best” diet. This only creates food fear & stress. There are only foods that NOURISH & make you feel GOOD & foods that HINDER you & make you feel CRUMMY. Some of these can be those deemed “healthy” like fruits & vegetables, you just can’t break them down & digest them properly.⁣

You may still be having symptoms because:⠀⁣

❌You haven’t addressed the root cause. There is a reason for symptoms. Don’t put a bandaid on it. My approach is find the root cause & develop a system to fix it. Is it an infection, stress, lifestyle, overtraining, Candida, bacteria, no sleep, too much fiber/too little fiber, not chewing your food, too large of meals, food combos?⁣

❌You’re stressed af & not making a change. That gut brain connection isn’t bs. It controls many things from mood to energy to digestion. If you can’t chill out, your gut can’t do its job.⁣

❌Sleep. Rest & digest means just that. If you’re always wired, it’s hard for the body to adequately rest & digest. It affects the 🚽 too.⁣

❌Histamine/food intolerance: some lack enzymes to break down specific foods &/or our guts are so inflamed we’ve developed an intolerance over time.⁣

❌Stress. Over exercise. Under eating. Malnourishment. Life stress. ALL STRESSORS.⁣

A day in the life: What I learned over 1 year on the carnivore diet

Lotsa carnivore questions today about what a day in the life of this girl looks like. It ain’t special y’all it’s just a routine that works for me. 

I’ll summarize for those who are new around here! Welcome! 🥩  Bookmark this on Instagram, there’s a lot of info! I also did an interview which is here on my blog that explains all of my transition over my carnivore journey.

▫️I don’t ‘treat myself’ or ‘cheat.’ Food is not a reward/something to earn. I also dislike saying cheat because it implies it’s going to benefit you in some way. Cheaters cheat to win. Do you really think you’re winning by cheating yourself?

▫️I eat 2 meals/d on avg. My days off or if I can sleep in, I now eat 1 meal. You must experiment. Your experience/needs will be different than mine.⁣ It takes TIME. It took me an entire year to fully adapt &, yes, I gained 15lbs initially.

▫️Majority of meals are my Airfryer Crispy meat bars. 85% ground beef, ground chicken. Avg 2lbs of meat/d. Ground meat is easier to digest & track. I removed most pork & dairy, I don’t digest’em well. I don’t add extra fat often. Choose meats that are higher in fat. No I don’t like organ meat, I prefer the taste of grain fed over grass fed beef.

⁣▫️I stick to beef bc it’s satisfying & delicious but not SO delicious I want to binge. Food addicts tend to have issues controlling carbs, sugar, sugar free substitutes, keto treats, dairy, butter, cheese, bacon, pork rinds, hyper palatable & processed meats)

▫️I track macros loosely. It keeps me accountable & I know where to adjust. Rice cakes on occasion post workout or in the evening if I need them, rarely above 50g/day. Macros 10% C – 30% P – 60% F for ME** around 1900-2100 cal/d. Workout fasted at 5 AM on weekdays. Yes I drink coffee before. Work out 5d/wk, 1 active recovery day, 1 rest.

▫️YES, you can CrossFit & carnivore, CAREFULLY. Comes down to allowing yourself to fully adapt to being fat-fueled, meal timing, eating ample calories, & RECOVERY.

⁣⁣

▫️Sleep=nonnegotiable. 7 hrs min. Zzyquil helps. I take it most nights because I can’t shut my mind off.

⁣⁣

▫️Still hit 13-15k steps/day⁣, even on rest days, drinkin a ton of water + electrolytes, fasting when I’m not hungry (~18hrs avg), eating when I am.⁣⁣ No extended fasts, no snacking.

▫️I do drink socially. I don’t typically eat & have cocktails I choose 1 or the other. I also don’t like to eat late. Last meal is usually around 2 or 3p.

▫️Favorite self care is coloring, writing, walking, live music, time with friends, working out @3kings_athletics , @hotworx.fishers infrared saunas, @vitalityivbar , routine colonics treatments via Brandy Mason Colon Hydrotherapy in Carmel (I have her info), @massageheightsindy

All of these experiences are going to be different for you but I hope what I’ve learned throughout my journey can help steer you in the right direction 😉🐮

Healing and losing the weight often means doing things you don’t want to do

“Your appetite will correct itself.”

Used to think this was bullshxt.

When I started an animal based nutrition approach this is what I heard. In this photo I was about 10lbs heavier on vacation, embracing the journey.

Had many of you ask about this yesterday & my recent weight loss.

I’m excited many of you want to try a more animal based approach & YES I absolutely believe its a wonderful lifestyle of eating which corrects many health issues, but I also want to make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons & not just wanting to hop on the “bandwagon” because you seek weight loss. 

It’s not for everyone’s lifestyle needs, some of you NEED specific kinds of carbs in your diet to feel & function better. Just because I prefer this style of eating doesn’t mean I think everyone should do it. No diet dogma here. We’re all different.

I had a question from a follower yesterday asking what she needed to do to heal gut issues & finally see weight loss. 

I responded with some hard truths.

You will most likely have to do things you don’t wanna do. Things I had to do:

  • Reduce workouts: no more 2 hrs of CrossFit & 20k+ steps a day. More rest days. I have to modify, reduce intensity & steps. Requires me swallowing my ego & not picking weights & movements I don’t need to do anymore for LONGEVITY as a goal.
  • Ate in MAINTENANCE & SURPLUS for almost 8 MONTHS. GAINED 15lbs in the process. Experimented with intuitive eating, macro ratios, fasting, meat, portions, tracking glucose & ketones, etc. Figured out I get better results tracking macros. Ground meats work better as far as tracking, simplicity, & satiety. Carb refeed days via rice cakes or white rice work great when I need them with minimal negative feedback. My appetite did “correct.” I eat slower & know know when I’m truly full.
  • Different fasting windows affect you differently. Don’t recommend any newby to fast, just get adapted to the way of eating 1st. You’ll find what works best. I can fast longer now. I don’t do extended fasts. The longest I go is about 20hrs.
  • What gets TRACKED gets MANAGED. I know a lot of you don’t wanna track but HOW ARE YOU GONNA KNOW WHAT TO CHANGE IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY AWARENESS OF WHERE YOU’RE STARTING? Quality & quantity matter. After a while you master it & won’t have to track but you need to learn quality & quantity & how it affects you 1st. It’s about making EDUCATED choices.
  • If you’re having gut/hormone issues, do a true elimination diet & stick to something longer than a few days or 2 weeks. This takes TIME. You didn’t have these issues after 1 day &/or put on the weight in 1 day. There are no quick fixes or magic. Put in the work. Get help from a coach or practitioner, get tested! Quit guessing. I worked with multiple practitioners, coaches, protocols & diets, & tracked symptoms/trigger foods for DECADES.

Do the DUE DILIGENCE — experiment, eat more, educate yourself, sleep more, have patience, seek help, fix your relationship with food & self 1st, quit binging on the weekends, overtraining, & treating your body like a dumpster fire.

CrossFit, Crohns, & Carnivore: How to Optimize Life as an Athlete

Tips to optimize a low carb lifestyle as an athlete/avid exerciser with special digestive needs:

▫️For my carnivore low carb’ers:

1.) Just get adapted-eat meat, find the low carb sources you love, cut the junk, find what eat windows that work for your schedule, track to make sure you’re eating enough food.⁣

2.) Focus on healing any gi issues & give it time. Be patient & consistent. You don’t feel good all the time, as with any diet it takes time to find your groove. Most hit a slump around 2 weeks. Reduce the intensity & volume of your workouts (especially my crossfitters & Orange Theory enthusiasts)

3.) Thrive & THEN play around with fat loss or muscle gain goals. You’ll be more self aware & educated once your reach this point.⁣

Not until someone is adapted & healed do I recommend any kind of playing around with fat loss cuts.⁣

For some it may take 3-6 months or it can take years depending on what kind of healing (gut, hormonal, metabolic etc) you have to do.⁣


▫️For someone who is just learning how to best manage IBD – I wanted to share my learning tools as an athlete. Do not give up who you are because of IBD – you will need to adjust & pay attention to your body, but you can continue to do what you love as well! There will be good days & bad days. Some days you may need to modify workouts, movements, intensity & volume. 

SLEEP & HYDRATION

I drink water with electrolytes from @goultima Sleep has made the biggest impact on me physically & mentally. Shoot for at least  7 hours. I am in bed asleep by 8:30 at the latest most days, wake at 4am the majority of week days. Sleep is the most important thing to manage during any season. NON NEGOTIABLE.

NUTRITION

Everyone has different triggers & different needs. Do not apologize for having to eat a certain way or bring your own food in social situations. Food choices are extremely important. For me, I find lowfodmap, easy to digest, gluten free, low lectin, minimal dairy, animal based nutrition with the exception of white rice, plain rice cakes, & rice Chex cereal if I feel like I need some carbs (don’t crave or need them anymore now that I’m fully adapted to a more carnivore lifestyle). But I believe you should always leave room for flexibility & no diet dogma. Do what works for you. Carbs are most optimal post workout & in the evening prior to bed.

SOCIAL SITUATIONS

I understand this is a rough spot for many with autoimmune issues &/or special digestive needs. Use your uniqueness to educate others why you need to eat the way you do. Maybe it’s something they need to hear too. Be confident, bring your own food if you have to, eat before you go out, custom order your meals. I set a limit of 2 alcoholic beverages in social situations & also mix my own drinks the majority of the time. Just order a shot of whatever liquor you want & whatever mixer you want. That way you have control over how much alcohol is in that drink. There have been times I’ve also brought @zevia as a mixer. Voice your needs to the restaurant & they will accommodate. 

STRESS MANAGEMENT 

Stress plays a huge role in inflammation. Sleep, take more rest days when you need them, make sure you’re eating enough food for your activity, take walks, spend time alone.Learning how to manage stress is a skill. Be kind to yourself!❤️

How to Nurture the Power of Decision

Don’t bullshxt me Darlin’

Decisions still give me anxiety. 

They just rile me up. It means I have to choose something & release something else.

I realize now it gives me anxiety because I fear making the wrong choice & somehow that makes me a bad person. A failure. An imposter. Which are 2 of my worst fears.

How about guys? You feel this way too?

I feel if I make a ‘bad’ decision, I’m not achieving, I’m not people pleasing, & that makes me less worthy somehow.

I realized it was paralyzing me & there are no wrong decisions — only an experience.

That doesn’t make me a bad person that makes me human. I focused too much on the end product & not on the love of the journey & process. 

This was applicable to my love life, my relationship with food & body image, career goals — you name it.

Also, let me remind you, nothing is irreversible. Picture the worst case outcome. Trust me, you’ll be fine.

Dr. Joe Dispenza preaches the POWER is in the present, becoming unattached to outcomes.

We can’t worry about the past, it doesn’t need us anymore. Learn the lessons.

⁣Now, 2nd guessing.

This shows up in the smallest ways. 

✅Ex: I choose the hamburger but 2nd guess myself when your wings come out. 

✅Ex: I choose to go to CrossFit but Karen down the road went for a 5 mile run. Maybe I should’ve done that.

✅Ex: I chose Partner A because he feels comfortable & safe but I truly want Partner B but somehow don’t feel good enough for partner B.

✅Ex: I chose job 1 bc it gives me freedom. But I really need job 2 bc it’s stable yet I’m afraid of commitment.

Am I the biggest fxck up in the world because I did so? No.

So here’s what I want to reiterate, decisions are crossroads. You’re not less worthy because you make a decision that didn’t turn out.

You’re not indecisive or savage or weak or broken or stupid or whatever you tell yourself. 

It’s simply your baggage being pulled out of your bag. 

So sit yo 🍑on the floor & unpack your baggage — it’s not gonna unpack itself.

The One Exercise You MUST Do

When you read this title, most think of someone spending hours in the gym. If you would’ve asked me years ago, I wouldn’t have given it a second thought, I would’ve thought the same thing.

The one exercise you MUST do…

…exercise your mind.

It never would have occurred to me the power and influence of our minds. How our minds push our bodies to defy expectations, beliefs, and even our own biology. Call’em miracles?

Think about the placebo effect.

So lets chat about two habits I cultivated that can also help you change your life. You can start right now. It’s easy, promise!

I knew when I was in the pit of ONE of my rock-bottoms, cuz ya gurlz had many, I had to start changing my beliefs & mindset.

⁃ My health was not good.
⁃ I was bloated & constipated all the time it seemed no matter what I ate.
⁃ I was putting on weight (FYI when you hoard negative emotional energy, that can be the actual culprit literally weighing you down).
⁃ My performance in the gym sucked.
⁃ I didn’t wanna wear anything but baggy clothes, thank God I wear scrubs to work. Which also translated into me wanting to hide all the time. Hermit mode engaged.
⁃ I was in debt, yet I couldn’t stop myself from overspending because I was putting a fxcking Band-Aid on a bullet hole — I was unhappy. You know it’s a problem when you order shxt from Amazon & you forget you ordered shit from Amazon.

I felt like this was just my story & I could never get ahead. I can’t tell you how valuable to was to invest in coaches to guide me along my way: business coach, nutrition coach, therapist, functional medicine docs, family docs. Despite me doing all the physical exercise known to man (president of the ‘habitual over exercisers club’ right hurrrr), the one exercise I was not doing — exercising changing my mindset to rewrite my story.

So what did I do?

The two habits that changed my life forever — GRATITUDE every morning & cultivating my ENVIRONMENT (mental & physical) to RECEIVE ABUNDANCE & what I wanted.

I started listening to podcasts and YouTube‘s to people I inspired to be like.

Successful people.
Positive people.
Learning about things that would make me better as a coach and human and partner and friend and daughter and coworker, etc.

First thing in the morning I say at least three things I am grateful for and something I love about myself.

Second thing, I check my podcasts and YouTube‘s to see what I wanna listen to today.

BONUSES…let me give you a couple more.

I detoxed my social media and unfollowed anything and anyone that made me feel negative energy or the need to compare & mourn past versions of my body (it only fuels disordered eating and body image.)

I also detoxed the people in my life. Yes, I understand this is a hard one especially when it comes down to friends and family. But it is absolutely necessary. Stop ignoring that nagging feeling that keeps telling you you don’t need to be around that friend or that person you keep dating but they treat you like yesterday’s trash.

Trash creates more trash.
You attract the energy and vibe you put out.

When you fall in love with who you are, under any circumstance, you awaken the love you need within you and you naturally attract and experience more love and success in your life.

This is a lot easier to do when you cultivate a nourishing environment for you to grow into your fullest potential.

Exercise & Food Anxiety – The Obsession with Control

I didn’t know whether to laugh or throw up. 

Can I just wrap up in a warm blanket & eat Texas Roadhouse rolls all day???

Quarantine hit. My workout routine was ripped from my life. Anxiety hit. The thoughts of past self sabotaging behavior started to creep up. 

Should I restrict? 

How many more steps do I need? 

Fugggg I can’t sweat.😩 I’m gonna pack on 20lbs, better cut food. 

What if my “safe” foods are taken away?

When I began specializing in gut issues & primarly women’s relationship with food & body image, I saw a pattern. I LIVED the pattern — basically an obsession about control over food & exercise.

We deny we have an eating or behavioral disorder — we DO, sister. But you don’t have to stay there.❤️

Signs include: 

  • Feeling panicked when sick, injured, or vacation jacks up our workout routine
  • Feeling like walking “isn’t enough”
  • Restricting or allowing food based on exercise that day.
  • Feeling we have to “earn” food.
  • Fear about gaining weight
  • Feeling worthless if any weight gain occurs, obsession with the scale & letting it dictate our attitude for the day

One client said, “I feel like I MUST control & workout everyday. If I don’t, I feel worthless & obsess about it until I do workout.”

We talked about how that disordered need for control is taking over our ability to intuitively listen to our body’s cues to rest. It also affects our energy, hunger, sleep, digestion, hormones, & bluntly— our ability to give a shit. 

This relationship with food & exercise tends to make us miserable. Paralyzing us from enjoying the important things in life.

Here’s how I help clients (& myself) establish a better relationship with our food & exercise:

  1. Disconnect the connection of “perfection” with food & exercise to our worth & obsession with having to earn food.

I used to count every calorie I consumed, down to the gum I excessively chewed. I only ate the calories I burned that day. I only ate diet food, hoping to save calories & carbs. I was chained to numbers. My macros were shackles. My mindset & perception of my methods & myself were the enemy. It wasn’t the food or exercise. 

When we were young, we knew when we were hungry & we stopped when we were full. Because of environmental & emotional factors,  getting stuck in cycles, many of us lose touch with our true hunger cues. 

This is where I find intermittent fasting & or setting a meal schedule or eating window is helpful, teaching us when we’re actually hungry & preventing mindless/emotional eating.

Also viewing food as fuel for our day & workouts instead of a reward is a helpful way to rewire our brains from earning to nourishing.

2. Focus on simply moving your body.

Workouts should be enjoyed. Walking IS ENOUGH. Shoot for 10k steps per day or simply increasing your steps by 1k each week till you reach your goal. If you have a good relationship with food, there is no need to kill yourself in the gym 7 days per week. Spend adequate time eating at your true maintenance calories. You should not be dieting more than 1-2 times per year. 

Before quarantine, I would walk, CrossFit &/or bodybuilding 5 times per week with one rest day and one active recovery day. I love the community & push of a group Wod. 

Intra quarantine, I don’t have access to the equipment or facilities for specific workouts. I’ve worked out at home 3 days per week with minimal equipment and walked.

Haven’t gained, inflammation is actually down, & I’ve become more in tune with my body, hunger cues, & how to adjust my food & eating schedule based upon what my body is craving. 

3.  Surrender to the seasons. We aren’t meant to look the same.

Binges, disordered eating & body image, cravings, & anxiety for control flare up when we’re living in a chronic deficit &/or chasing a size we’re not meant to naturally be. 

Your hunger &/or lack of are signs your body is simply trying to survive. Lack of resources trigger our bodies to down regulate systems, cycles, & hormones. Wonder why you lost your period or you’re cold all the time, you plateau on 1200 calories & gain when you eat anything above 1600? BINGO. Don’t be afraid to Reverse Diet. Invest in a coach!

We’re really chasing a feeling, not a number. We want to feel worthy, loved, significant, safe, heard, seen, & happy. 

These are all a state of being my loves. 

It didn’t matter if I was 100lbs or 160lbs, happy was a state I FELT about my life at whatever season. If you don’t do the inner work & address the root cause, it’s like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound.

You’re afraid to surrender because you don’t want to give up control. Especially for my fellow Type A’s. 

Guess what?

You never had control, you became you’re own prisoner.

SET MACRO RANGES. Give yourself flexibility, if you’re not cutting for a fitness competition there’s no need to be that strict. Create a larger deficit during the week to allow more flexibility. Determine what is nonnegotiable. If you want cocktails, drink them but have a lighter dinner, get in more steps. ⁣⁣⁣

Low Carb Reset, Life Hacks & Longevity

I went into this low carb, insulin reset diet as another learning experience. What I found was a wake up call.

A lot of knowledge and life bombs here 💣

With the dramatic life changes for us all over the course of the past 2 weeks, cliché as it sounds, everything happens for a reason at precisely the right time.

I also listened & shared an incredible podcast on my stories & facebook group on protocols about insulin control & longevity with @jasonphillipsisnutrition & @drmolly.com this morning on my walk.

Why the reset? I had been overly stressed, trying to cut, eating a high amt of carbs (via jasmine rice/rice Chex/occasional alcohol) while intermittent fasting & focusing on 2 (occasionally 3) larger meals a day.

Backstory, for my new followers: 

👉🏻I have Crohn’s, struggled with a missed diagnosis of IBS basically my entire early life & was overweight.

👉🏻Don’t digest fruits or vegetables or fiber or seeds or skins well

👉🏻Thrive off animal meals & animal-based nutrition

👉🏻Struggled with disordered eating & bingeing

👉🏻 Spent 4-5 years healing my gut & getting myself out of metabolic adaptation because I ate poverty macros for fuggin forever

👉🏻Tried to competitively CrossFit on Paleo, Quito, low carb & did all the dumb shit for years 

👉🏻I eat lowfodmap, gluten-free, dairy free, bullshit free 😆, and basic af, not cute meals are my jam. Why? Because that’s how I like to eat, Karen.

My cut started out well, but as we progressed I noticed my energy was all over the place I was starting to feel more out of control eating larger meals (I was fuller throughout the day). My fasting blood sugar was consistently higher (for me) around the 95 to 100 range, staying elevated even 2 hours after eating. 

Mine typically sits around 80 to 85 in a controlled environment, fasting.

My digestion was decent, but I still felt inflamed, puffy, & like I was carrying a lot of “fluff” around my middle which I did not have in my 20s. (I was more low carb as far as my diet approach in my 20s, & my workouts were lower intensity). I didn’t CrossFit until my 30s.

My lifestyle now is very different from even December 2019. My stress is higher & I’m traveling more. 

My last cut was amazing (I had not dieted in 2 years & was coming off of a surplus) My schedule & stress were more controlled. 

Last 12 week cut for a photo shoot.

💭🤔 HELLO!!!! Katie, you’ll be 38 in July, you don’t have the same body you had in your 20s. Dude, you’re almost a legit Cougar 😻😂 

💁🏼‍♀️It’s time to get real, refocus, & realign. 

To those of you in your 30s, let me tell you, things change quickly. You don’t recover as quickly, nights of bad decisions haunt you for weeks, and you’d rather go to bed by 9:30 than stay up & go clubbing. PS you still don’t have your shit together in your 30s. 👍🏼🤘🏻

I’ve learned this is the time to accept, adjust, & think about longevity more so than a ripped set of abs. 

I love being lean & feeling light & strong, but just because you look the part doesn’t mean you’re healthy on the inside. Abs, striations, & single digit body fat — don’t help you live to a ripe old age. 

These require different levels of commitment and flexibility with your diet and training. Be realistic.

MY CHANGES:

👉🏻Focus on a low carb approach, primarily animal-based nutrition. Why? Because I thrive off animal meats & already don’t digest fibers and plants well. I will harp at you till I’m blue in the face, go your own way! Don’t send me fucking hate messages because I eat animals. I’m not telling anyone to eat this way, I’m simply sharing my experiences and reasoning why. 

👉🏻I also am not “CrossFitting” because all the gyms are closed, therefore, my activity is more lower intensity. This would warrant lower carbohydrates for my needs are not as high.

👉🏻I am also sleeping more, reducing caffeine intake, & fasting at least 14-16hrs overnight to recover, give my digestion a break & allow my body to balance itself out. 

👉🏻I need an approach that is going to keep me fuller, longer, with less energy crashes to sustain long days working at the clinics & hospitals. I don’t like worrying about food & a bunch of meal preps, just my personality.  I prefer two large meals a day. Naturally, protein and fats will do this. they take longer to digest and are harder to digest by the body — keeping blood sugar more stable, energy levels more stable with you feeling fuller, longer like a cherry on top. Which is why I’m taking a higher protein, higher fat approach.

👉🏻Macro wise, I am loosely tracking just to make sure my calories are in check. Keeping my carbs 50 g & under. Not really paying attention to where my protein & fats fall, obviously I’m getting plenty of both with animal-based nutrition with the inclusion of nut butters. 

👉🏻I Am tracking weight, progress photos, & blood sugar with a simple glucometer (am fasting, 2 hrs post meal, bedtime) just to see how my body tolerates specific ratios, salt intake, stress, & food choices. Not because I’m focusing on the weight on the scale. Obviously when reducing carbohydrates, you’ll naturally lose water, so a lot of this is water weight loss, initially.

THINGS IM LEARNING:

✅CrossFit is not in aesthetic sport. Stop choosing CrossFit to look like a bodybuilder. Align your training, lifestyle, & align your food. Manage you mofo stress!

✅I personally feel much better on a carnivore-ish diet which aligns better with my lifestyle right now. 

🌀My digestion is exceptional, my bloating is gone, bowel movements routine & normal, my puffiness is gone, I feel lighter. 

🌀After nine days I’m noticing aesthetic changes finally. Stomach is starting to lose that patchy fat in my stubborn areas above and below my belly button. 

🌀Yes with the training differences I’m getting smaller, and softer but I’m fitting more naturally back into my happy setpoint. My weight is staying around 113 pounds. 

🌀I don’t hurt as much (minus my broken toe I have right now). 

🌀No energy crashes, I have absolutely no cravings for sugar and I’m offen satisfied with one large meal during the day after my fasted walk. 

🌀I love walking, it is my savior mind and body. I don’t need to work out six days a week and I need to sleep more. Duh.

✅The more data we have the more we can make educated informed decisions about our lifestyle & food choices. Do we need to worry about tracking & measuring all of the time —  NO! But there’s a time & a place for it so you can learn & make educated decisions about how to live your life for YOU. 

Quit whining, complaining, yo-yo dieting, yo-yo training, yo-yo living your life aimlessly because you’re not educating yourself. Get tested, invest in mentors, coaches, doctors to help you. There are free podcasts, wonderful people & resources on social media, books you can purchase & things out there at minimal cost. 

✅Your goals should be centered around 4 different areas: healing, performance, aesthetics, & longevity. Your seasons will change, adjust accordingly.

✅People just think glucose is just a measure of carbs, it’s not, it’s a measurement of your lifestyle. Stress, food choices, sleep, your workouts, air pollution, under eating, over eating, toxins, artificial shit you put in your body or on your body — it all matters.  It all affects your physiology, hormones, gut health, & processes that go on internally. 

✅You have to ask yourself what level of stress you are OK with in your life. Adjust accordingly. If you choose this stress level, don’t bitch when you don’t get what you want.

✅The biggest thing people ignore are their mindset & their thoughts. So why are people having such a hard time right now being at home with their thoughts? 

BINGO.

Trigger Foods: Why They Cause GI Issues

Many times when asking your doctor, “What can I eat and what should I avoid?” when dealing with digestive disorders they tell you, “Just eat what you want unless it bothers you.” 🤔😳🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏻‍♂️

Maybe they’ll add a few restrictions like a low fiber, low-fat, gluten &/or dairy free diet but beyond that you’re on your own. 

I repeat, WE ARE WHAT WE DIGEST & ABSORB.  When dealing with certain digestive issues like IBS or IBD disorders, gut dysbiosis like Candida & bacterial overgrowths, the inflammation & symptoms can trigger further problems other than discomfort like malabsorption. Subsequently nutrient deficiencies are a prevalent issue. 

THE WHAT & WHY OF COMMON TRIGGERS

FAT

We need fat to live. It’s needed for absorption of vitamins A, D, E, & K, but in people with certain issues, it causes symptoms. Fat is a powerful stimulant to the G.I. tract which can exacerbate diarrhea & is hard to digest in individuals without a gallbladder or those who have undergone a bowel resection. 

CAFFEINE

Another stimulant. Bad for those with diarrhea, can be an aid for those with constipation. Keep <200mg/day. 

ALCOHOL

It’s a toxin y’all. Delicious yes, but does nothing positive but give you the confidence to dance & eat like an a$$hole. It inhibits folic acid absorption, is an irritant to the G.I. tract, filled with empty calories, no nutrient value, dehydrates, raises estrogen levels, & interacts with numerous medications. 

GLUTEN 

Gluten means “glue” & that’s exactly what it is: two proteins, gliadin & glutenin, stuck together. Gluten is found in wheat, barley, & rye. An intolerance or sensitivity is the body’s inability to digest or break down the gluten protein found in wheat, grains, & certain products. Causes inflammation & abdominal discomfort & symptoms ranging from skin rashes to more severe problems in those with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder. 

DAIRY

Many people with problems are also lactose intolerant. Dairy is an inflammatory food, one of the top allergens. Due to lactose, which is milk sugar, it causes problems in those who are lacking the enzyme lactase which breaks down the lactose. Bacteria in the colon feed on the undigested sugar, producing hydrogen, which leads to diarrhea &/or build up of gas. 

GAS PRODUCING FOODS & DRINKS

Common culprits are high fodmap foods, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, beans, garlic, onions, leeks, cabbage, beer, high sugar drinks and fruits. Many sulfur producing vegetables produce more gas & fermentation which causes bloating. 

RED MEAT

Minimizing red meat greatly lowers hydrogen sulfide levels which can have a negative affect on the health of the colonic mucosa. It’s harder to break down & digest which causes stress, requires more energy, which also causes that energy slump. 

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS 

The ols like sugar alcohols which are found in many sugarless chewing gum’s, cookies, sweets, processed foods are a big trigger of bloating & diarrhea via fermentation because our bodies can’t break them down.   

FRUCTOSE 

Consuming fruits with high sugar can cause bloating,cramping, diarrhea because certain individuals lack the enzyme to break down the sugar thus allowing the colon bacteria to consume triggering symptoms. 

FIBER

There are two kinds of fiber insoluble & soluble. 

INSOLUBLE Fiber is found in raw fruits, vegetables, certain grains, leafy greens, brands, skins, nuts & seeds. This fiber does not take on water in the gut but provides undigested bulk to the stool. For those of us that cannot break down the fiber it does not easily pass through structures, can contribute to irritation in those with an inflamed gut. 

SOLUBLE fiber takes on water providing bulk to the stool but is easier on the G.I. tract. It’s found in quick oats, white bread, cereals, white rice, pasta & potatoes. 

Again, we all have different triggers so keep a food journal, notice patterns when eating certain things, have patience & know that by making simple food & lifestyle adjustments, you can help minimize your own symptoms.
