How many calories should I be eating?

“How many calories do you eat?” “How many calories should I eat?”

Fabulous question & one that is unique for you. Just because your neighbor eats a certain amount of calories or follows a certain diet or just because I do doesn’t mean it’s correct for you.

Lemme explain…

The number of calories someone requires to maintain their bodyweight is unique & specific to them. Therefore, just because 2 people are the same height, weight, age & gender, doesn’t mean they should consume the same amount of energy (which is calories) per day.

Daily caloric requirements are influenced by many factors including these & swipe for cheat sheets!⬇️

▪️ Occupation (active vs sedentary)

▪️ Training frequency & intensity

▪️ Recent dieting history (metabolic adaptation, disordered eating, etc)

▪️ NEAT levels outside of work (walking for ex)

▪️ Diet quality, thermic effect of food (whole foods vs highly-processed)

▪️ Overall health & hormone status

▪️ Sleep Quality, Stress

▪️ How much muscle you have

It’s a matter of perspective. What you think is “alotta calories” is highly subjective, as different people will have different interpretations of what they consider to be “alotta food.”

Also, macro requirements will depend on the individual as well, everyone has a different threshold of energy & macro ratios of which they thrive.

Pay more attention to the below vs hyperfocusing on numbers:

▪️ Energy availability is in a great position to optimize health, performance & recovery

▪️ Your diet includes whole foods highly bioavailable & packed with essential nutrient requirements

▪️ Your relationship with food is healthy, hunger & satiation cues are on point

Enjoy the cheat sheets, experiment, & have fun! Don’t be afraid to eat!

You got this! How many calories are you crushing? 🦾🥩

How sleep affects your entire life! Do you know your sleep chronotype?

Good morning America 🇺🇸🐮☕️🐈‍⬛
and all my friends from across the globe!🌎❤️

Ya girl slept almost 9 hours & didn’t get up until 815! Holy sh*t Pete & I actually had good lighting for a decent picture☀️😄

I can’t stress enough how important sleep is. As someone with Crohn’s disease I’ve noticed over the years sleep is the number one factor that affects the way I feel throughout the day AND my ability to achieve specific body goals including fat loss.

It affects my gut flares, digestion, performance in the gym, cravings, hunger, & my ability to give fcks about things I really need to get fcks about.🤷‍♀️

— And it makes me a much nicer human 👀

As far as how I manage sleep:
I shoot for an average of 7 solid hours of sleep a night. I’m typically asleep by 845ish PM.

On workdays I get up at 4 AM, Im at the gym training by 5 AM, at work by 6:45am. Work 7am-7pm.

Did you know there are #SleepChronotypes ? I AM A LION🦁

I came across @thesleepdoctor years ago! There are 4 genetic chronotypes that describe sleep patterns.

IG LINK HERE TO SAVE POST FOR A REFERENCE

These Chronotypes affect your metabolism, productivity, creativity, & most of all your energetic, mental + physical health.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some people are genetically wired:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉To sleep half awake & alert, light sleepers, have a low sleep drive.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 To be morning oriented driven optimists with a medium sleep drive. True morning person – wake up & shine.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 Prefer a solar based sleep schedule, awake with the sunrise, wind down with the sunset, have a high sleep drive.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 To be night oriented people with a medium sleep drive. They get a second wind after sunset & want to complete projects and/or have a creative rush.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It helped me not only understand myself but also how to schedule my day to better serve my health, happiness, AND as a result👉increase my success in life!

He has a 3 minute quiz to see if you are a lion (morning bird), bear (sun up to sun down rhythm, most common), wolf (night owl) or a dolphin (who are all over the place as far as sleep needs).⁣

A reminder on being dogmatic about your diet

How bout we start our week off with a laugh? (& #MeatBars of course) Then somethin I wanna remind y’all, especially our newbie “carnivores” out there.

Saw a meme this mornin that said somethin like:

How to be an adult:

  • pay your bills
  • Don’t do meth
  • Eat bacon (I’ll add beef 🥩😉)

😂

Seriously tho…

I’d also like to add “- Go your own way” to this list.

Had some people flip their sh*t that I included rice cakes on my list of how to build a meat-based meal on last nights post.

“Well won’t that spike your insulin???? We’re not supposed to eat those!!!” They said.

Y’ALL…it all comes down to what you metabolize & absorb properly, what you digest efficiently, the quantity, your emotional relationship with that food, what food combos you pair that food with, the application of why you’re choosing to consume that food & when – I could go on & on.

A lotttttta stuff right?!

Numerous factors come into play when it comes to what kind of food, diet, & workouts are right for you.

The same thing with trying to figure out your career path or love life or purpose, etc – we are all going to be different!

Also, if you’re not digesting fat properly you’re also going to have a hard time controlling & stabilizing your blood sugar most likely. Carbs are not the enemy here. It comes down to body function & your relationship with foods.

ANY food or substance you put into your mouth (let’s keep it clean here 😆) are going to stimulate some kind of body function reaction & response. Protein & fat both raise blood glucose to varying degrees.

If you can’t break down food to absorb & utilize the nutrients like fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, etc. you will experience sub optimal health & struggle with body goals.

Food preferences will be different for all of us. Life is way too short to be dogmatic about anything in life especially love, food & fitness.

So let’s not over complicate things, be overly sensitive, & take everything so personally that we allow the silliest things to cut like a knife & make a wound that doesn’t need to be there.

Trust the journey of your life & you will gradually outgrow what you thought you should do. You’ll outgrow what you thought you couldn’t live without & fall in love with what you truly needed & what was meant to be❤️

How to hit your protein & examples of meat based meals on carnivore, low carb, and keto

Meal prep cheat sheets to help give y’all visuals on examples of how to break down meals.

Had tons of questions about how to hit 50g of protein. The biggest tip is TRACK YOUR FOOD!

I like MyFitnessPal.

Educate yourself on what it is you’re consuming in meals. You don’t have to track forever, but self awareness is an investment that will serve you for a lifetime.

Here are cheat sheets of a variety of meats & animal based foods to make this as easy & basic af as possible!

You can eat 2-3 meals/d or even 4 of you need to. You guys can do things however you want, there is no right or wrong way.

Protein requirements will vary for different individuals, your goals, food & training preferences, health history, digestibility, etc…

I still recommend weighing out your meat raw, which is the information available on the label. Meat shrinks down 20-30% in weight after cooking. I find most people are either weighing & logging meat incorrectly &/or are inefficient at eyeballing.

Also included the “meat your macros” with #MeatBars examples if you like 2 meals/d.

Hitting protein goals is a non-negotiable. Starting out hitting your maintenance macros is also highly recommended when adjusting to this way of eating (WOE). Use the tdeecalculator.net to find yours.

Our need for protein becomes even more important if we’re avid exercisers, in a muscle-gaining phase, a fat loss phase, &/or as we age.

My typical range is .8-1.2g/lb of bodyweight for most active individuals. The leaner the individual, the higher protein most can tolerate or require. I’ve had some even prefer up to 1.5g/lb of bw especially if they’re carnivore & in a fat loss phase. Those with more body fat, I’d likely have aim closer towards that ~0.8 recommendation.

Some examples I’ve used with clients:

21-40 y/o, 105 lb, 5’0-5’2 lean individual = ~105-158g protein (~1.0-1.5)

30 y/o, 120 lb, 5’2-5’3 lean individual = ~120-135 grams protein (~1.0–1.1)

30 y/o, 160 lb, 5’3-5’5 individual = ~130 grams protein (~0.8)

45 y/o+, 130 lb, 5’3 individual = ~130-145 grams protein (~1.0-1.1)

Happy meal prepping!

Why your body never changes and what to do instead

Listen, I belonged to the “I’m working my azz off (literally) club why am I not seeing results?” for decades.⁣

Weekends were always excuses, social time was always an excuse, i’ve been good all week so I deserve this…it’s easy to make excuses.

Happy swiping. Do any of these sound familiar to you?⁣

Triggered much?⁣

Good. Our triggers tell us where we need to heal & change.⁣

The majority of the questions asked this week were centered around not seeing body change or fat loss despite cutting food.

Most of the time they come down to these things that you don’t want to hear.

If you keep doing what you’ve always done you will always get the same result. Remember that. ⁣

I tell you guys these things with love.⁣

You’re worth the change.⁣

Beyond Meat vs Beef

💁🏼‍♀️Better rethink your meatless Mondays, huh?!

Just gonna leave this here & let you make your own decisions.

My love for beef started 39 yrs ago on July 2nd when I hit the ground runnin. My mom was bailing hay. 🦾😄

Used to have a bumper sticker that said, “I love beef like some people love the Lord.” 😂 Who would’ve known that couldn’t be more true today! 🥰

As for me,  #BEEFitswhatsfordinner (& just about every meal❤️🥩) Being raised on a beef cattle farm here in Indiana and having an animal science degree from Purdue, yes I may be biased…but facts are still facts. ✅

Depending on your preferences, you can choose whatever percent lean ground beef meats (haha see what I did there lol 😂) your caloric & health needs.

They can range from higher fat like 72% lean all the way up to the leanest at 96-99% lean.

My favs are 80% ground chuck, 85% ground beef round & 90% ground sirloin.

I actually prefer grain fed vs Grass fed and finished as far as taste. I don’t stress out about buying organic or not, choose whatever one you like. No judgment here.

Homegrown beef is the best #kellyfarms certified Hereford beef, baby 😃 🍀 🥩 🐮

Why Digestion Matters & How It Can Affect Weight Loss: symptoms, triggers, and supplements

Why digestion matters & how to properly take digestive enzymes!

⁣Eating trigger foods, even when I transitioned to carnivore caused a lot of inflammation. I discovered some animal-based foods like pork, pork rinds, PSMF bread, & turkey caused water retention, constipation, weight gain, & poor digestion.

Enzymes significantly helped! I don’t have a gallbladder either, fyi.

I created an entire supplement guide just for you!

I really had no idea the application of digestive enzymes or how vastly different foods affected digestion early on in my journey.⁣

Enzymes play an essential role in physiological processes throughout the body. Natural digestive enzymes, such as lipase, amylase, & protease, aid in breaking down fats, proteins, & carbs.

First & foremost, if you’re experiencing chronic problems, go get tested, see your doctor, practitioner, or qualified coach. Stop ignoring the root causes.

The best time to take your enzymes is right before, or right as you start eating. When in doubt, check the label. Usually anywhere from 10-20 minutes right before you eat is ideal.⁣

Most of us lack stomach acid. We don’t slow down when we chew our food, we’re always in get sh*t done mode & this is the 1st step in the digestion process. ⁣

EXAMPLES OF COMMON SUPPS & TIMING:⁣

💊BETAINE HCL &/or ACV: increase stomach acid to breakdown down macros, especially proteins & fats. Take prior to eating.⁣

💊OX BILE: great for people without a gallbladder, especially doing keto/low carb/carnivore. Take prior to eating.⁣

💊MOST BROAD SPECTRUM DIGESTIVE ENZYMES: take before or mid meal.⁣

💊FISH OIL & MULTIVITAMINS: take mid meal.⁣

💊PROBIOTICS: take at night on an empty stomach.⁣

Below are lessons learned, my triggers & symptoms. You may be experiencing similar. Remember we’re all different!

MY SYMPTOMS

▪️bloating after eating dairy, carbs, larger meals, too much sf gum

▪️reflux, poor digestion, inflammation after eating larger quantities of pork & turkey

▪️constipation when eating too lean too long & too many pork rinds

▪️bloating & constipation after eating PSMF “bread” (egg white powder sensitivity)

▪️Bloating after larger lunch & dinners

▪️poor digestion in general later at night (which is why I don’t eat “dinners” & eat early in the day)

▪️gas & gi bleeding eating plants, grains, & most carbs other than white rice

▪️right lower quadrant pain during flares

▪️chronic constipation & slow transit digestion if I eat trigger foods, don’t get sleep, or am stressed to the titties

▪️low stomach acid & reflux eating trigger or meals too high in fat for my threshold

▪️low energy after too large/high fat meals

▪️energy crashes after eating carbs

▪️inflammation & water retention when eating triggers, too many artificial sweeteners, carbs, shitty sleep, too much stress, too much alcohol, workouts too high in intensity/volume/frequency

MY TRIGGERS

▪️Gluten⁣⁣, corn, fiber, grains

▪️Artificial sweeteners, preservatives⁣⁣⁣, most seasonings

▪️Nuts & seeds, popcorn, spicy food

▪️High fiber raw veggies⁣, basically all plants

▪️Gas producing veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels)⁣⁣⁣ lettuce

▪️Gritty fruit, skins/seeds

▪️Highfodmaps, lectins, oxalates

▪️Sugar alcohols, sugar free products

▪️Pork, Turkey, & dairy in larger quantities

▪️PMSF Bread

▪️Meals too high in fat in one sitting

▪️Chewy, fatty meat like steaks & roasts (which is why I choose ground & shredded meat, I digest them better)

Hope these help! If you’re in need of a consultation, I understand what you’re going thru & we’ll figure out a plan of action.

Why I Don’t Eat Plants, Gluten, or Fiber and What I Do Instead

I personally do not digest plants, gluten, fiber, nuts & seeds, lectins, or oxalates well. Figured this out thru trial & error & 3 decades of living with gut issues.

You can catch the details of my story & whole first year one the Carnivore diet here in this interview.

The research points to YES according to Dr. Mark Hyman. Gluten has been found to negatively impact the lining of the gut, creating “leaky gut” or intestinal permeability, even in those who do not have celiac disease.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
The lining of the gut is supposed to be strong & tight, keeping food, waste, & microbes inside the digestive tract. Gluten can cause the release of an inflammatory protein called zonulin, which opens up the junctions in the lining of the gut & causes gaps, allowing particles to leak into the bloodstream (where they don’t belong) & creating an immune response. This sets the stage for systemic inflammation.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
To summarize world renowned gut specialist, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, animal foods are the foods that FEED the human body & SUSTAIN the physical structure of the temple you live in. Because only animal foods can provide the right quality protein & fats to build your physical structure. Our human digestive system is perfectly designed to digest & absorb animal foods.

Tap photo for cheat sheets on recipe for #meatbars

These are basic physiological facts.

Plants are indigestible for human beings. In order to digest plants mother nature created ruminant animals. They are equipped to digest plants, like cows, they have 4 stomachs with specific microbes. You have to have the right kind of microbes to digest plants & fiber efficiently.

We don’t have a rumen like cattle. We have 1 stomach that releases hydrochloric acid, which creates a hostile environment for many microbes, which is why the stomach is the least populated area of the digestive system. This acid & digestive enzymes are specifically equipped to break down meats, fish, dairy, eggs.

Plants do not digest to a large degree, they are than passed through the rest of our digestive system. We digest a small amt of water, things like vitamin K, vitamin C & some phytonutrients

Our body — muscle & fat & organs, are structurally almost identical to animal based products. Only animal foods provide the optimal protein to build YOU efficiently.

The more they study plant proteins, gluten is the most common, the more researchers find it is unsuitable for the human body & damages everyone in some way.

Light bulb moments right?

And fiber?
Which is what all my doctors told me to add back in along with fruits & veggies when I was experiencing chronic constipation & slow transit digestion are all like sandpaper on my insides.

Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water. It’s abrasive to the gi tract & damages the epithelial cells. Bacteria ferment fiber, creating gases like carbon dioxide, hydrogen, & methane.

Now do you understand why you’re getting gas pain in building when you keep adding fiber & more plants to your diet?!

A Journal of Gastroenterology study showed stopping or reducing dietary fiber intake reduced constipation & its associated symptoms. Showed complete resolution of constipation, bloating, & painful bowel movements within the study group on a zero fiber diet.

Now do you understand why I stick to meat & eggs & my digestive symptoms & constipation are completely gone since going meat-based?!

You just need to eat food you digest & absorb properly. All of us will be different but biologically most of us will do better on an animal-based diet.

Choose food that doesn’t cause any digestive distress or emotional issues triggering self sabotaging habits.

Hands-down for this cattle farmer’s daughter👉that’s meat for me.
